I have no recollection of my parents sitting me down and giving me the talk about what was going to happen to my body through puberty. I guess they probably thought my monthly Dolly and Girlfriend magazines would have me covered and able to avoid that uncomfortable talk. They guessed right.
I do remember, however, my mother giving me and explaining my first skin ritual. A press pump bottle of cleaner, a spray toner and a small jar of moisturiser. They were all made of glass, which to me meant fancy! I immediately pictured my mum at some expensive counter in David Jones picking up my impressive gift because in my head that was the only place you could purchase small glass jars of face moisturiser.

Those three pieces sat on my duchess, pride of place. In a house where we had the “good plates”, I wanted to keep my good lotions for a special occasion. Whatever that meant in skincare I am now unsure but I know those bottles were looked at more than used.
My high school years saw me chasing boys the most pore-stripping substance I could find on the market. I would buy it by the 750ml bottle with a packet of cotton wipes and spent my afternoons enjoying the tingling feeling of cleaning
my face. Even just typing that makes me miss that stuff though my mid-30s skin possibly wouldn’t enjoy it so much.
As I grew older my tastes changed and I swayed from a ritual including all the skincare to just a facial wipe but it was always something. By the time I hit my thirties I could feel my skin had lost a bit of its bounce back and that peachy glow had dulled a little. I realised that it was now that those magic lotions and potions had to really come into play.
I switched to only using a cream cleanser (admitting I had to use a cream cleanser was just like finding my first grey hair!), I always suss out a fancy serum and have one on the go to apply at night, plus I have a daytime and a nighttime moisturiser. I use an exfoliator a couple of times a week and if I have the opportunity to have a facial (hello gift idea) I jump at it.
I’m such a grown up!
