I’m a book nerd. Love books! Could spend all our money on books. Lucky I hone it in, but sometimes I explode and go nuts!
Last week Ari and I joined our local library which I was super excited about, Ari not so much. He was CRANKY! Not about the library, just life in general. It’s tough for a 2 year-old. So we ended up walking out with 4 books for him and I picked up PostSecret for me on the way out which I saw when I was picking him up off the floor mid-tantrum.
Some picture books are so beautiful. I worked in a book shop for a few years when I was younger and loved it. My favourite job was stacking the shelves with all the new books. Lucky the book shop gave nice chunky bonuses each quarter to fund all my purchases.
I thought today, with books on the brain, I would fill you in on a few of my current favourite children’s books to read to Ari.
Ari was given this book when he was born by close friends. Their kids loved it because of the mention of Willbee’s bum. It is a great one to read because it rhymes. I don’t know about you, but I love reading aloud with a bit of rhythm and rhyme (actually 4 out of 5 of these books rhyme to prove it).
Willbee is a little bee who unravels his favourite jersey while flying around your garden and luckily comes across some lovely new friends who help him get his bare butt home.
The people behind Willbee the Bumblebee also wrote The Wonky Donkey. We haven’t read it yet but I must remember to put it on our library list for next time.
This one you might have to pick up at the library. Was a favourite of mine when I was a young’s. It must still be in print somewhere.
Jillian is a little bit feral in a normal busy kid sense and her room is a pig style from all her fun. Jillian pushes and pushes her Mum until she basically loses her shit. Hold on! This tale is a little close to home.
There is also a sequel of great value, The Wonderful Pigs of Jillian Jiggs.
Who doesn’t love Hairy Maclary! We bought the big pack of all the books super cheap at Costco a few months ago and they have been on bedtime rotation most nights since.
My favourite to read is Hairy Maclary and Zachary Quack. It might be because it is always the last one Ari chooses out of the set. It could be the cuteness of the camaraderie between Hairy and Zachary at the end, in the beginning Hairy doesn’t want a bar of that pesky duckling!
This was a library pick up.
Ari loves it because the kids go to swimming lessons like he does. I love it because it is the real life business of everyone’s week leading up to that chill out Sunday where it is awesome when you have no plans.
I think you too will love it.
Beautiful illustration and great contrast of flat out week days to the enjoyment of doing whatever your heart desires.
With so much shittyness when you flick on the news lately, I often wonder how the world will be for my children. It feels like the horrible stories are escalating and I hope that a lot of the dictators of the craziness calm the farm or we might just implode. The news is never watched in our house when kiddies are about.
I like reading Whoever You Are to Ari on those days where global issues get to my head. So much negativity is wiped clean and the book reminds you that there are people the world over that may not look or speak the same as you but inside we are all the same.
Do your kiddies love books?
What are your favourites?
