For me, there is no place like home.
It is my family’s sanctuary, our comfort, and our home base. It is where our team, our little growing family comes together and simply enjoys each other’s company.
By the end of six weeks holiday we were all happy to go off and do our own thing. Except for my son who started Prep this year, he is still torn about going to school thinking we are all at home having fun together.
This post is in partnership with BUPA
But that’s not my point.
Team O’Grady (my team) is a busy collection of souls. It includes little minds that need lots of stimulation, so often keeping us all together for a quiet activity, say a board game, is like trying to keep two puppies in a box.
We like noise. We like fun. We like spending snippets of our day bringing our team together even if we are just taking ten minutes. Here is what we get up to:
One of my family’s favourite things to do is a good old-fashioned dance-off, and I am proud to say that my kids will try to bust out the old caterpillar if that is where the mood takes them. Dance like nobody is watching is key because it sends your team into fits of giggles.
We stream a kid-friendly playlist or the soundtrack to one of the kid’s favourite movies. Ok, we stream the Trolls soundtrack and only the Trolls soundtrack!
This antic is a bit cheeky from my end because who doesn’t want an excuse to stay in bed longer? Big beds are made for wrestling and I don’t know about your family but when mine are in close proximity they can’t help but touch each other until someone snaps! You will also often get a rendition of “Five little Joeys, jumping on the bed”. Until someone really does fall off the bed!
So much fun, you get to lie in bed longer and your team gets to play together, winning!
If our house is home base, our backyard is definitely our playing field. While Daddy is home you will find us out there most afternoons enjoying our quality time together. The shed is bursting with lots to do and we drag out something that we can all get involved in. When the weather is warm we love a good run under the sprinkler or everyone has a heap of fun with a bag of water bombs, maybe except dad.
A big bag of colourful balls can add a whole new level of fun to the trampoline. The only killjoy on this is weight restrictions so we can’t all bounce but problem solved when someone is throwing balls in from outside.
Obstacle Course Action
Look around; if your place is anything like mine it could already be an obstacle course! My near 5-year-old loves planning out his own track and he is ecstatic when we are all joining in. Cushions, rulers, teddy bears or dolls can all become markers and the only thing you then need is your imagination (but kids have plenty of that anyway).
Quality time together needn’t be so extravagant day out. Memories are made from snippets like these. It is these little moments of fun together that builds your team.
